"That" Vogue Cover or How To Buy Style / "Ona" Vogue naslovnica ili kako stil kupiti novcem


After weeks of resisting to write my opinion about a matter that everyone (and their dog) already have one, finally I had to cave in.

Nakon tjedana odupiranja, ipak sam pokleknula i napisala svoje mišljenje o nečemu o čemu već svatko (i njegov pas) ima svoj stav.




I am not a Vogue subscriber, I need to add. I merely like to browse an occasional issue that features new season's collections. Having read numerous columns, both raves and criticisms, I now feel that one more opinion won't hurt. We have all seen the infamous Vogue cover with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. Yes, we know that the famous starlet's style (and looks as well, one might add) has improved, Kanye thoroughly cleaned it up; there were stylists, designers, teams of people involved and they surely did the best they could. Therefore, can money really buy (some sort of) style, even if it means wearing the same designer head to toe? Seems that money can buy you a Vogue cover though. There is nothing to be shocked about, American Vogue hasn't exactly been a temple of style recently, there has been a slight loss of subscribers during the last couple of years, Wintour needed something "pop" to make media talk about the magazine again. No matter what your opinion of "Kimye" is, once you see the actual pictures that everyone has been talking about, you might feel underwhelmed. Even the cult photographer who took them, Annie Leibovitz. “Annie hates the photos,” a source said. “She thinks they’re awful. The entire shoot was Kanye’s vision. He was extremely hands-on; he should have just taken the photos himself. Annie really isn’t happy with the result. She is feeling like something of a sellout."

As a photography laywoman, I absolutely don't get any emotion from them. Blank canvas with an imaginary story, just like protagonists themselves. Just like a lame reality show. Also, as Cricket would point out: "Have you seen that poor baby North, looking so unhappy and cold in all the pics?". "This week, the news emerged that this cover is one of the best-selling of all times. There comes a reality check-up that style and fashion do not sell copies. What sells a magazine is controversy. These days, Twitter and Instagram followers as well. A critical mind would also point out that the best-selling rap albums are the ones by artists who buy their own album copies. Food for thought? Take another look at the pictures, make your own opinion of them, or don't. What stays a fact is that money can't buy style. It can buy you a Vogue cover, a nice car, mansion, fake life story, but not style. Style is something totally different and it creates a story, it doesn't buy it.


Naglašavam da nisam pretplaćena na Vogue, tu i tamo prelistam koji broj, pogotovo ako ima najavu novih sezonskih kolekcija. Također, pročitala sam brojne članke o ovoj Vogue naslovnici, osvrte kako pozitivne tako i negativne, te smatram da još jedno mišljenje neće škoditi. Svi smo već vjerojatno vidjeli naslovnicu koju krase Kanye West i Kim Kardashian. Znamo da se stil poznate starlete znatno popravio, Kanye je uposlio vojsku stilista i dizajnera koji se svojski trude pročistiti njezin stil odijevanja. Stoga, može li novac kupiti (nekakav) stil? Novac doduše izgleda može kupiti naslovnicu Voguea. To nam ne treba biti šok, američki Vogue već dugo ne predstavlja hram stila, a zadnjih godina i gubi određen dio pretplatnika. Wintour je upravo zato trebala nešto "popularno" da mediji počnu pričati o Vogueu. Bez obzira što mislili o "Kimye" senzaciji, nakon što pogledate fotografije, možda ostanete razočarani. Baš poput kultne fotografkinje koja ih je snimila, Annie Leibovitz. "Annie mrzi fotografije", kaže izvor. "Misli da su užasne. Cijelo je snimanje bilo Kanyeova vizija, bio je aktivno uključen, jednostavno je trebao fotografije snimiti sam. Annie nije sretna s rezultatom, osjeća se kao da se prodala."

Kao laiku, same fotografije ne izazivaju mi nikakav osjećaj. Kao prazno su platno jedne isprazne priče, baš poput samih protagonista. Poput otužnog reality showa. Kako bi Cricket istaknula: "Jesi li vidjela ovu jadnu bebicu North, izgleda tako nesretno i pothlađeno na fotografijama?". Ovog tjedna mediji javljaju da je naslovnica jedna od najprodavanijih svih vremena. Taj nas podatak suočava sa stvarnošću koja dokazuje da moda ne prodaje časopis. Ono što ga prodaje jest kontroverza, te danas, i obožavatelji Twitter i Instagram profila. Kritičan bi um također primijetio da su neki od najprodavanijih rap albuma upravo oni čije su primjerke kupili sami izvođači. Materijal za razmišljanje?  Pogledajte još jednom fotografije, stvorite svoje mišljenje, ili nemojte. Ono što ostaje jest činjenica da novac ne može kupiti stil. Može kupiti naslovnicu Voguea, dobar auto, veliku kuću, lažnu životnu priču, ali ne i stil. Stil je nešto totalno drugačije, nešto što stvara priču, a ne kupuje je.
